Minding the Maintenance
To get maximum life and enjoyment out of your prized BMW, you'll want to stay on top of maintenance and minor repairs before they develop into major headaches. Consult your owner's manual for a guide to the manufacturer's recommendations for preventive maintenance services. Each model comes accompanied by a manual detailing the specifics for that particular auto. This includes the service schedule, oil and fluid specifications, and other necessities for keeping your luxury car in great shape. Aside from the unique needs of each BMW model, there are several common maintenance points. BMW provides the Ultimate Care Program for their vehicles made from 2017 to the present. That plan covers some routine services for three years or 36,000 miles. Take time to understand, however, what this does and doesn't cover. For instance, if the needed repair is considered a "wear and tear" item, you’re out of luck. Also, models made before 2017 and those driven beyond the 36 months or 36,000 miles don't qualify. (Note: The company offers a four-year/50,000 warranty with service reminders and roadside assistance as well as an option to buy an extended maintenance plan.) Unless you're receiving a service at no charge, you may decide to consider an alternative to the dealership shop. We're here to help you with the recommended maintenance schedule.
Each BMW has a Conditioned Based Service (CBS) system. This allows sensors to monitor driving conditions and engine load, not just mileage. Although the manufacturer calls for routine maintenance such as oil/filter and coolant changes once a year or 5,000 miles (whichever comes first), the CBS may detect and display the need for maintenance sooner. Your BMW will usually need a fuel filter exchange somewhere between the 20,000 and 40,000-mile mark. Spark plugs need replacing at approximately 60,000 miles. The first brake fluid change comes at 30,000 miles, but it will typically only need changing every 60,000 miles after that.
